JARANDILLA

One kilometre far from the campsite, we will visit the National Parador Carlos V; the Templars’ Church, which is in the city centre; the Roman Bridge, where we will be able to have a swim in the crystal-clear water of the Jaranda stream; and the antique part of the town. On the first Sunday of August, the celebration of the Old Trade Fair takes place.

RUTA DEL EMPERADOR

Starting point: National Parador Carlos V, in Jarandilla.

Distance: Approximately 12 kilometres , one-way route.

Duration: 4 hours, one-way route.

Difficulty: Low.

State of the road surface: Stone paths, roads and urban roads.

Recommended period of time: The whole year.

NOTE: We will leave from the National Parador Carlos V, go across the road and head towards the “Cuesta de los Carros” until we arrive at a square called “Los Carros.” Once there, we will set off for Marina Street until we arrive at the path that leads to the Roman Bridge, where we will be able to see a beautiful landscape. We will go across the Jaranda stream through the bridge, go ahead and go up the hill through a forest full of oak trees until we arrive at a road which is situated in the municipal area of two towns. We will walk down until Aldeanueva de la Vera. In the town, we will go through the antique part and go along a path until Cuacos de Yuste. Once there, we will head for the Yuste Monastery.

PORTILLA JARANDA

Starting point: Jaranda campsite.

Distance: Approximately 14 kilometres , one-way route.

Duration: 4 hours, one-way route.

Difficulty: Medium – high.

State of the road surface: Stone paths.

Recommended period of time: Spring, summer and autumn.

NOTE: We will go up until “El Guijo,” either by car or on foot. Once there, we will leave the village through De la Mata Street and head towards “El Trabuquete” going around the Jaranda stream. We will go past green grasslands and numerous places which are perfect to have a swim, until we arrive at a hamlet called Chozas de Pimensaillo, 5 hours’ time from the town. Here we will find the beginning of a mountain path which was used for the black market and which goes from the towns belonging to La Vera until Barco de Ávila through the Portilla Jaranda.

RUTA CARLOS V

Starting point: Tornavacas – Valle del Jerte.

Distance: 27 kilometres.

Duration: 9 hours.

Difficulty: Medium.

State of the road surface: Paths and tracks.

Recommended period of time: The whole year.

NOTE: It is a route that recreates the original itinerary followed by Carlos V in his journey through this land belonging to La Vera. It is conceived to be a one-way route with ascents and descents. The whole route is clearly marked with white and red signs. We will go through woods full of chestnut trees until we arrive at the “Collado de las Lomas,” 1100 metres high. From here, we will walk down until the new bridge, which is over the “Garganta de la Serrana.” We will go up until the “Collado de las Yeguas” from which we will have a general view of the region: La Vera. From the Collado, we will walk down until Jarandilla.

PUENTE JARANDA

Starting point: Jaranda campsite.

Distance: 7 kilometres , one-way route.

Duration: 2 hours, one-way route.

Difficulty: Low.

State of the road surface: Tracks and roads.

Recommended period of time: The whole year.

NOTE: This route starts in the Jaranda campsite. After leaving the campsite, we will go right and up ( 300 metres ). On the left, we will take a path that leads to the Roman Bridge, from which we will be able to enjoy a wonderful view of the Jaranda stream. We will walk along a road (3 kilometres) and will continue our way through a path, where we will be able to see tobacco and red pepper plantations.

TRABUQUETE

Starting point: Guijo de Santa Bárbara.

Distance: 2.835′ 1 metres from El Guijo , one-way route.

Duration: 1’5 hours from El Guijo, one-way route.

Difficulty: Medium.

State of the road surface: Stone paths.

Recommended period of time: The whole year.

NOTE: We will go up until El Guijo, either by car or on foot, and will leave the village through De la Mata Street. On the right, we will be able to see the Jaranda stream and the pools that have been created among the rocks. We will go across the stream through “El Tocino” bridge, from which we will be able to see “El Canchal del Moro.” We will continue going up and on the left side of the stream we will find “ La Portera.” After going across it, we will find “El Trabuquete” on the right, where we will be able to relax and have a refreshing swim. After that, we will come back following the same route.

REFUGIO DE LAS NIEVES

Starting point: La era del llano (Guijo de Santa Bárbara).

Distance: Eight kilometres far away from Guijo de Santa Bárbara, one-way route.

Duration: Two hours from El Guijo, one-way route.

Difficulty: Medium.

State of the road surface : It is a path full of stones.

Recommended period of time: Any season is good to do the route.

NOTE: We will go to El Guijo de Santa Bárbara, by car or on foot, it is up to you! When we are there, we will have to look for or ask for the bullring and just there we will find the beginning of a path to go to the mountain hut. It is a beautiful path surrounded by mountains, water and a marvellous landscape. Along the way we will find many trees such as oaks and chestnuts. We will also see an old shepherd house. Finally, on the top of the mountain, we will find the mountain hut. It was built in 1964.
